Unkad — Somali for creation from nothing. It shares a root with unug, the cell: large things assembled from small units, contribution by contribution.

We are a non-profit AI research laboratory in Mogadishu, Somalia, building the Somali language into the age of AI:

• Qor Af-Soomaali — our community platform where Somali speakers write, translate, and validate text across sectors and dialects (Maxaa tiri and Maay). Peer-validated, linguist-verified, released openly.
• Safety & alignment research — benchmarks, refusal evaluations, and red-teaming methodology for Somali and other low-resource languages, shared with the broader alignment community.

Everything we release here is CC BY-SA 4.0, with contributors credited exactly as they consented to be. The corpus belongs to the Somali-speaking world.
